The Mask is a very entertaining short story that contains just the right amount a horror as to not induce daily nightmares to older children, but enough to delight fans of gore.The opening of the story finds the main characters, Jack and Stan, enduring the worst day of the year: the first day of school. Jack and Stan discover they have a mysterious troll-like kid on their bus and in their classes. The hideous and pungent Zeb is a new kid, who secretly feeds off the fear of others.
The story continues on Halloween when Stan wears a puzzling mask he received in the mail. Wearing the mask, Stan becomes another being; he produces a hysteria of fear that satisfies Zeb.
The Mask is a very accessible read; you can finish two readings in about a half hour. It's fun, original, and well written. I look forward to more dark tales from Steven Allan.

I don't think I'll ever wear a mask in the same frame of mind again!
A nice short story in the horror genre by Mr. Allan. I won't call it "suspense" because the direction is clear. As a result, I would suggest this story for young adults.
In time, I'm sure Mr. Allan will move into more sophisticated waters and I look forward to seeing the results. Still, this story is a bargain at twice the price!
